Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s

La Descente d’Orphee aux Enfers and La Couronne de Fleurs

Presented by Boston Early Music Festival

Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs,
musical directors

With an international reputation for groundbreaking work reviving Baroque opera masterpieces, the Boston Early Music Festival brings the glamorous world of Baroque opera to life, complete with an internationally-acclaimed cast of operatic stars, the Grammy-nominated Boston Early Music Festival orchestra, lavish period sets and costumes, astonishing special effects, and fantastic Baroque dance. The BEMF presents a double-bill of Charpentier’s two stunning works.

The tragic La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers tells the famous story of Orphée who decends into the underworld to rescue his beloved Euridice using his musical charms. La Couronne de Fleurs, based on a text by Molière, depicts a musical contest in tribute to Louis XIV as shepherds vie for a crown of flowers from the goddess Flora for the most beautiful and eloquent aria. These miniature masterpieces showcase one of the great composers of the French Baroque.
