Members of the Handel and Haydn Society

Vivaldi's Cello
Antonio Vivaldi is renowned as a master of the concerto, having produced over 500 works in the genre. Join cellist Guy Fishman and principal players of Boston's Handel & Haydn Society in exploring some of the 27 rarely-heard cello concerti the master composed, along with arias and ensemble works by Vivaldi and his contemporaries, including Purcell, Handel and Durante.

Members of the Handel and Haydn Society

Considered America’s oldest continuously performing arts organization, the Handel and Haydn Society (H&H) will perform with a select chamber ensemble from their Period instrument orchestra.

Under the artistic direction of Harry Christphers, H&H has performed the American premiers of many great Baroque and classical masterworks like Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s The Creation, and employs the region’s finest period instrument players and singers, including many who represent the next generation of leading artists. Widely known through its concert series, tours, local and national broadcasts, and recordings, H&H presents its nine-program series in Boston and Cambridge, making this a very special North Shore performance.

Recently, H&H has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, and Gramophone (UK). In 2011, The Hub Review (Boston) dubbed H&H “the best chorus in New England.” H&H made its European debut in 1996 at the Edinburgh International Festival and recent tours have taken H&H to the Haydn Festival in Esterházy, Austria, and to the BBC Proms Festival, London, which the London Telegraph named one of the top musical events of 2007.

In 2003 H&H won a Grammy award for its recording of Tavener’s Lamentations and Praises, co-commissioned with Chanticleer; and in 2005, it had two recordings on the Billboard Top 10 classical music chart. Since its first recording collaboration with Harry Christophers on the CORO label in September 2010, it has issued three live commercial recordings of works by Mozart—Mass in C Minor (2010), Requiem (2011), and Coronation Mass (2012) as well as Haydn, Vol. 1 (September 2013) and An American Christmas (October 2013).
